Facilitating CEFTA Academic Network
CDI is proud to contribute to the CEFTA Academic Network (CEFTA CAN) – an initiative developed under Albania’s 2026 Chairmanship of the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA). CEFTA CAN aims to establish a structured cooperation framework between CEFTA and the Western Balkans academic community. Its objectives are to strengthen the use of research, data and analysis in trade policymaking across the Western Balkans.
The first practical instrument of the Network is the CEFTA Research Award 2026, an open, competitive call inviting Master’s thesis candidates and PhD students from CEFTA Parties to develop policy research papers containing actionable recommendations aligned with CEFTA’s 2026 priorities. The Award focuses specifically on research areas where academic analysis can provide practical support to the implementation of priority measures in CEFTA’s day-to-daywork.Research themes cover trade in agri-food products, trade in industrial products, and trade in services, with digitalisation as a horizontal dimension across all three areas.
Having worked at the intersection of research and policymaking in the Western Balkans for more than two decades, CDI has assisted the Secretariat for the launch event in Tirana on 5 May 2026, supports the design of the CEFTA Research Award 2026 Call for Policy Research Papers, and coordinates with the CEFTA Secretariat and participating stakeholdersto facilitate the smooth operation of the initiative.
Through its involvement in CEFTA CAN CDI contributes to building a durable bridge between evidence-based research and policymaking in the region, supporting the implementation of the Common Regional Market Action Plan 2025–2028 and the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
